William B. Duke was a Hall of Fame trainer that few modern horsemen, remember. His major claim to fame comes from training the 1925 Kentucky Derby winner, Flying Ebony. The national Hall of Fame website has this to say about him:

"William Duke enjoyed tremendous success as a trainer overseas in England and France and soared to the top of the sport in America late in his career.  Duke began working with trotters before turning his focus to thoroughbreds in 1887 when he formed a partnership with owner Enoch Wishard. In 1895, they shipped to England with a string of 10 horses and enjoyed moderate success. Englishman Sir John Thursby was impressed by Duke and hired him as his head trainer.  After several years working for Thursby, Duke moved to France and received his big break when he was named as the private trainer for William K. Vanderbilt, a grandson of Commodore Vanderbilt and one of the wealthiest men in the world. Money was never an issue with Vanderbilt (he owned an estate on Long island with 110 rooms and 45 baths), which he demonstrated by spending lavishly to acquire the best racing stock. With Duke heading the stable, Vanderbilt topped all owners in France in purse earnings in 1906, 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911. Duke led the list in earnings among trainers each of those years. Duke won four editions of the French Derby for Vanderbilt with Maintenon (1906), Seasick (1908), Negofol (1909) and Tchad (1919). He also trained Vanderbilt's undefeated Prestige, Northeast, Brumelli and Oversight.  When Vanderbilt died in 1920, Duke became the first trainer for the Aga Khan, who was the top owner in France in earnings in 1924, the year Duke won his fifth French Derby with the Aga Khan-owned Pot au Feu. Duke decided to return to America at the age of 68 in 1925 to train for Gifford Cochran, who had inherited an estate reported to be worth $12 million. That year, Duke won the Preakness Stakes with Coventry and the Kentucky Derby with Flying Ebony (the Preakness was run prior to the Derby that year). Both horses were owned by Cochran. Duke became the first trainer to win both the Derby and Preakness in the same year with different horses. Duke also added a victory in the Travers Stakes that summer with Dangerous, another horse owned by Cochran. The 1925 season capped a remarkable career for Duke. He died after a brief illness in January 1926. "

Todd Sloan, the famous jockey that popularized the modern jockey seat, writes in his 1915 book this of Enoch Wishard who was Duke's partner abroad:

"I put down Enoch Wishard as one of the best trainers, I have ever come in close touch with. He, I believe started life as a blacksmith in a town called Wellsville, and from this town also came Duke, who at present, trains for Mr W. K. Vanderbilt and John M'Graw, the manager of the New York Baseball Club. Enoch Wishard made a study of horses' feet from early days before he took to training, and he followed this up by always caring for their mouths. These certainly are two of the greatest essentials when considering a horse's chance of progressing in training. Fortunately many trainers of the present day have given serious attention to these matters, which one must say were far too often neglected in the past. Wishard asked regularly about the mouths of his charges and he would never leave the care of their feet to anyone but himself. Perhaps more than anyone else he has proved how a man can reach the top of the trainer's calling owing to observation and taking the trouble to think about the disposition of his horses. Wishard's, by the way, is a case that helps to prove that there is very little heredity in training. Tell me any great trainer whose son has proved as great a man at the business as his father before him. The talent is supposed to "pass down," but that is sheer nonsense. I do not think there are "born trainers" any more than there are "born jockeys." Some jockeys may have taken up riding through their fathers having been at the game, but it doesn't follow for a moment that they will achieve success. Take the list of all you can, HOW HORSES WERE SHOD, ever remember: there are a few exceptions on the other side but the vast majority goes to support what I have said."

I was fortunate enough to purchase this 1926 training journal and charts of  William's son, Harold, who was assistant to his father when he died and who, accordingly took over the training assignments of his stable on his father's  unexpected death in January of 1926.  Few daily training schedules remain from the training legends of old and this example even though of his son should be a good indication of how Thoroughbred race horses were trained in the "old days" by a master horseman.  Harold, being the son of William, should be a good example of how his father trained. This journal consists of the training schedule of 19 horses:  older horses  were Flat Iron, EndlessLittle AsbestosBaldpateRosinaUnfurled, MultifloraGuinea HenFire Dog    plus   the two year olds of Circlet, Sun Flag, Eglantine, Caricature, Undercover, Dolan, Fumehal, Neolith, Chara and Draconis (won Tremont Stakes in 1926) and Yearlings being started at the end of 1926 of Friar Rock, Sun Briar colt, North Star, Vulcain Aro, Vulcain Wrangue, Spur, Smoke Screen, Fair Play, Finn, Burlesque, Stephen Great, Princess Palatine, Cimfria, Masque, Fariy Wand, Temptation, Cashmere. My Analysis:

Gallop miles were not listed in this journal prior to breezing, nor were shoeing specs described either.

The journal is unclear how Duke treated his two-year olds the first part of the year, prior to mid-March when they were put on the race track for the first time. SInce he seems to start his yearlings the year before, chances are they were broke and breezed 1/4 mile distances the previous Fall and probably turned out till March. Duke appears to have first started breezing his 2 year olds on April 3rd, a 1/4 in :27-:30 and 3 days later, he again breezed them an 1/8 mile, but this time galloped them out 1/4 afterwards. Thereafter, he approximately seemed to breeze his two year olds regularly every 2-4 days with every 3 days being an average period cycle.

His older horses started breezing on April 6th at 1/8 with a galloping out of 1/4 mile. So basically we have a 3/8 work comparable to today's customs. They were breezed every 2-3 days on the average.  Little Asbestos was the first to race on April 24th after only 22 days of training so it seems
